In 2008, Adelaide got its first taste of a dedicated, big-billing blues event. At the inaugural Juke Joint at Queens, over 650 music fans enjoyed the best line-up of Australian blues talent seen in this city. And due to the overwhelmingly positive response, Rossi Boots will again present the Juke Joint at Queens, bigger and better, in 2009.
Blues legend has it that one moonlit midnight at a crossroads outside Clarksdale, Mississippi, young plantation worker Robert Johnson traded his soul for the talents with which he would not only win fame in juke joints across the Delta, but lay the enduring foundation of modern popular music. The blues has spread its roots far and wide since that fateful night, seeding many new styles and inspiring many of history's seminal musicians. With each generation, its paths diverge at new crossroads as it evolves with the times.
In honour of the past and with a look to the future, the 2009 Juke Joint at Queens will be expanded to a two-night event. The first night, The Roots, on October 2, will be a seated performance of traditional blues. The second, At The Crossroads, on October 3, will be a "rave for the blues heads" as headliner Chris Wilson described the 2008 event, and will showcase the country's most exciting contemporary blues talent.
